Our mostly frequently asked questions.
1. Is Uganda safe?
Yes absolutely. In the past there have been troubles in the far north of the country, but Uganda remains one of the most friendly and peaceful countries in Africa.
It is, in fact, one of Africa's most stable countries, and has one of the fastest growing economies on the continent. The tourism industry is growing all the time, and we have around 500,000 international tourists per year.
2. I’m just a beginner/intermediate kayaker. Will I be OK on the river?
No problem at all. The river is made up of lots of different channels ranging from class 1 to class 6. This makes it one of the most user-friendly rivers in the world for kayakers of all abilities.
We do recommend you take advantage of our coaching courses to help you get settled and show you around the river.

3. Should we use your Airport shuttles?
Yes. It is not a short journey (3 hours from Entebbe to Bugagali) Taxis at the airport are often in poor condition.
Prices have to be negotiated, and this needs local knowledge. Taxi-drivers, as in any third-world country, are sharp businessmen with a tendency to agree on one price and to change it on arrival, or worse, half-way-there!
Our shuttles use registered drivers, safe vehicles and you pay us, not the driver. You can even pay online before you arrive
There are some good friendly taxis, but they tend to be metered, have no roof racks and end up costing double what we charge.
Logistics
4. Should I get introductory guiding on arrival?
We highly recommend this, regardless of your ability. The river has many different channels, and there are many places where you just don't want to end-up, Equally, if you are very experienced, you don't want to waste time.
Local knowledge and experience can be invaluable, and occasionally life-saving. The rafting companies will only let you 'tag along' if you know the lines. They require you to have had introductory guiding with KTN.

5. What is the best airline to travel with??
Currently Brussels Airlines are offering the best deals for kayakers. They offer a bigger luggage allowance. There are preferential rates for kayakers who book through Kayak the Nile and if you want to bring your own boat, that goes free.

Also discuss malaria prophylaxis.
8. What is the best season for the river?
This is the best bit! The river runs 365 days of the year, and since the volume is controlled by dam-release, it is very dependable. Every day we can expect 1600 cumecs.
9. What is the food like?
We have many options, from local fare, to western style meals. You can even have pizza delivered to the door of your tent.
10. Are there good medical facilities close by?
Yes. We have an international medical clinic in Jinja and a hospital in Kampala which easily rivals most NHS hospitals. KTN has a resident doctor on 24hr standby.
11. Should I have medical and travel insurance?
Yes.
12. Are there good phone and Internet connections?
Yes, the mobile connections and landlines are superb. International calls and SMS are straightforward and extremely easy. Internet is not broadband but it is still fast enough to email. Explorers River Camp has a free internet service for residents.
13. What are the chances of freelance work?
Very low. We tend to employ our guides full time and all freelancers must be Internationally qualified and stamped by KTN staff or NRE trip leaders.
This involves paying for a small course and having all certificates with you. It is also illegal to work in Uganda without a valid working permit.
14. Can I bring my laptop and camera?
Yes we have good power sources, using British plug systems. You must bring or buy a surge protector and ensure that you lock your stuff in your room, or with the Explorers River Camp staff, when you leave it unattended. KTN can take no responsibility for your belongings.
15. Do you have kayaks for rent?
Yes KTN has a range of play boats available to rent, but frequently they have to be used for the kayak school operation. Demand can be high, so contact well in advance if you wish to rent a kayak.
16. Are there other rivers in the region to paddle?
Kenya offers world-class creeking in the appropriate season and there are plenty of areas still to be explored in Uganda and Rwanda.
17. What about visas?
Most nationalities can purchase a visa on arrival, at the airport. It costs $50 at present. Check with your local Ugandan high commission or embassy for more information.
