Community and Volunteering

Together we can create opportunities,
on the river and beyond.

Why Giving Back Matters to Us

At Kayak the Nile, the river is our home, and Jinja is our community. Every day we’re reminded how lucky we are to live and work in such a beautiful place, supported by the people around us. That’s why giving back is at the heart of what we do. We believe in creating opportunities, supporting young people, and helping build brighter futures both on and off the water.

Our Community Projects

We give back in ways that connect directly to our passion for the river and extend beyond into the wider community.

Our own CSR initiative, the Canoe Club introduces local girls and young people to kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding.

Through regular coaching, mentorship, and access to equipment, the club helps them grow confidence and skills on the water.

Each year we host a fun and inclusive float trip down the Nile. It’s a day of community spirit, laughter, and connection, with all proceeds going towards keeping the Canoe Club alive and thriving.

The biggest paddling event in Uganda, the Nile River Festival showcases the energy, skill, and beauty of the river. Alongside celebrating kayaking, it also raises awareness and support for community-based projects.

Partnering with
Luke Foundation Uganda

In 2025, we began a new chapter of giving back by partnering with Luke Foundation Uganda, a locally run and registered charity based here in Jinja.

In 2025, we began a new chapter of giving back by partnering with Luke Foundation Uganda, a locally run and registered charity based here in Jinja.

Founded in 2022 by Luke Ekisa—a trusted driver and vehicle fixer for Kayak the Nile—the Foundation has grown from supporting just two children to now caring for 25 children aged 3 to 14. Many are orphans or children of young mothers.

The Luke Foundation provides:

  • A safe and loving home with food, clothing, medical care, and education

  • Access to Tenda Primary School and Jinja Secondary School

  • Vocational and life skills training such as tailoring, farming, and crafts

  • Long-term support into adulthood, helping young people transition to independence at their own pace

Led by Luke, Manager Peter Owori, and carers like Mamma Jane (who teaches tailoring and life skills), the Foundation is funded by donations and volunteer contributions. They also grow crops to help feed the children and teach self-sufficiency.

We welcome volunteers who want to contribute time, skills, and energy to our community projects. There are opportunities to get involved both through Kayak the Nile and through our partnership with Luke Foundation Uganda.

Whether your passion is paddling, teaching, or simply being present with children, there are meaningful ways to get involved.
